The basics of Space

1. Define positive and negative space.

In a work of art the positive space would be the shape or figure.
The negative space would be the empty spaces between and around the shape or figure.

2. What words specifically describe three dimensional art ?

Some words that describe three dimensional art are, over, under, through, behind, and around. This is because most 3 dimensional structures are made to be free standing, so the viewer must navigate around the negative pace in order to see the art from all the different possible sides.

3. What are the two types of relief sculpture ?

The two types of relief sculpture are high relief and low relief sculptures. High relief is when positive areas appear further out of the surface. Low relief is when positive areas project out slightly.

In the picture below he occupies the positive space of the picture, and the background is the negative space in the picture.
